One day I awoke to find myself in a field of hands--frozen, reaching for, but never grasping, life. I was in between two mountains. They were black as soulless death. From one peak to another, I noticed a line as fine as angel hair; it was finer than a cell wall, finer than the silver thread that binds our spirit to our body. In the middle of this line, a man balanced on one foot. His body was fire and his eyes were emeralds. In an instant, he jumped down from the line and landed right in front of me.
His mouth opened wide and from it came a sound like rushing wind, like a lion’s roar, like an owl’s hoot, and like the slow cracking gurgle of molten lava.
I entered into his voice. It enrobed me in beautiful colors and terrifying images: a burning tree, a river of blood, a man wearing a crown of thorns holding himself as a baby, trying to nurse himself back to life.
If all the stars were made of harps and horns, they still could not match this voice.
I walked for days, weeks, years through that man’s voice. I found true sadness; I found true love; I found myself.
I saw day, then night. The night felt like it would last forever. The bliss of it all was priceless, meaningless, and sublime. But then came the cold stab--the pain of dawn.
The battle stretched on...
But the only way out of hell is through it.
